Beloved and Costly: The Climate Reckoning Behind America's 130 Million Pets

There are approximately 130 million cats and dogs living in American households. They sleep on our couches, star in our social media feeds, and occupy a central place in the emotional lives of tens of millions of families. They are, by nearly every cultural measure, beloved. Yet the environmental conversation about pet ownership in the United States remains conspicuously muted — a silence that obscures a climate footprint far larger than most owners have ever been asked to consider.

This is not an argument against pet ownership. It is, rather, a call for the same honest reckoning that climate-conscious Americans have begun applying to their diets, their vehicles, and their energy consumption. If we are serious about reducing our collective impact on the planet, our animals deserve a place in that conversation.

The Meat on the Bowl

The single largest driver of the pet industry's carbon footprint is also the most straightforward: what we feed our animals. The majority of commercial dog and cat food sold in the United States is protein-forward, relying heavily on beef, poultry, lamb, and fish. Cats, as obligate carnivores, require animal protein to survive. Dogs, while more metabolically flexible, are overwhelmingly fed meat-based diets by their owners.

A widely cited study published in PLOS ONE estimated that the meat consumed by American pets generates approximately 64 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent each year — roughly the same greenhouse gas output as 13.6 million cars. That figure places the American pet food industry in direct conversation with the broader livestock sector, one of the most emissions-intensive components of the global food system.

Beef, in particular, is a significant contributor. Its production demands vast quantities of land, water, and feed while generating substantial methane emissions from cattle. When beef appears as a primary ingredient in premium pet food — a marketing category that has expanded considerably over the past two decades — those emissions are absorbed into the household's overall climate footprint, whether or not the owner eats meat themselves.

Packaging, Waste, and the Landfill Problem

Beyond what goes into the bowl, there is the question of what surrounds it. The pet food industry generates enormous volumes of single-use packaging — foil pouches, plastic trays, multi-layer bags — much of which is not recyclable through standard municipal programs. The wet food segment is particularly problematic, as its combination of materials frequently renders containers incompatible with curbside recycling infrastructure.

Pet waste compounds the challenge. Americans dispose of an estimated four million tons of dog waste annually. While biodegradable waste bags have entered the market, the majority of waste is still collected in conventional plastic bags and deposited into landfills, where organic material decomposes anaerobically and produces methane — a greenhouse gas with a warming potential many times greater than carbon dioxide over a 20-year horizon.

Cat litter presents its own set of concerns. Conventional clay-based litters are strip-mined from the earth, a process that carries significant land disruption and transportation emissions. Americans purchase an estimated eight billion pounds of cat litter each year, the overwhelming majority of which ends up in landfills.

The Veterinary and Consumer Supply Chain

Veterinary care, while essential to animal welfare, also carries an embedded carbon cost. Clinics consume energy for lighting, climate control, and medical equipment. Pharmaceuticals are manufactured and shipped through global supply chains. Anesthetic gases used in surgical procedures — including some fluorinated compounds — are potent greenhouse agents.

The broader pet product market, which generates over $100 billion annually in the United States, encompasses an enormous range of goods: toys, beds, apparel, grooming products, training equipment, and specialty foods. Many of these items are manufactured overseas, shipped across oceans, and delivered to consumers through last-mile logistics networks that are themselves energy-intensive. The rise of subscription-based pet product services has accelerated delivery frequency, adding incremental emissions to each household's annual total.

What Responsible Ownership Can Look Like

The goal of this accounting is not to induce guilt but to generate agency. Pet owners who are already engaged in climate-conscious decision-making in other areas of their lives have meaningful options for reducing their animals' environmental impact.

Rethinking the food supply is perhaps the highest-leverage intervention available. A growing number of pet food companies now offer formulations that incorporate sustainably sourced proteins — including insect meal, which delivers comparable nutrition to conventional meat at a fraction of the land, water, and emissions cost. For dogs specifically, veterinarian-approved reduced-meat or plant-supplemented diets may be appropriate, though any dietary change should be undertaken with professional guidance.

Buying pet food in larger quantities reduces packaging intensity per serving and often lowers transportation emissions per unit. Choosing brands that use recyclable or compostable packaging, or that participate in take-back programs, directs market pressure toward more responsible manufacturing practices.

Transitioning to sustainable litter alternatives — including wood pellet, paper-based, corn, or wheat litters — eliminates the strip-mining burden of clay and often produces a lower overall carbon footprint, particularly when sourced domestically.

For dog waste, certified compostable bags used in conjunction with municipal composting programs — where available — represent a measurable improvement over conventional plastic. Some urban areas have begun piloting pet waste composting infrastructure, a trend worth supporting at the local policy level.

Adopting rather than purchasing from breeders reduces demand for resource-intensive commercial breeding operations. It also directly addresses the shelter crisis, in which millions of animals are euthanized annually for lack of homes — a humanitarian and ecological concern simultaneously.

A Movement That Includes Our Animals

The environmental movement has made extraordinary strides in expanding the circle of climate concern — from individual consumption choices to corporate accountability, from local air quality to global temperature targets. Pets, as a category of household impact, represent a logical and necessary next frontier.

This is not about loving animals less. It is about loving the planet that sustains them with equal commitment. The same science literacy and moral seriousness that Americans bring to questions of energy efficiency, dietary change, and sustainable transportation can and should be extended to the animals who share our homes.

Earth Day, at its core, has always been a celebration of life in all its forms — the ecosystems, the species, and the relationships that make this planet worth protecting. Our pets are part of that web of life. Honoring that connection means accounting for the full scope of what caring for them requires, and finding ways to do so that the planet can sustain.
