The United States electricity grid is not uniform; states in the Pacific Northwest draw heavily on hydropower, while parts of the Midwest and Southeast remain more dependent on fossil fuels. A viewer in Seattle streaming content from a locally powered data center may generate meaningfully less carbon than a viewer in a coal-heavy region watching the same video.

What Responsible Digital Platforms Are Doing

Across the technology and media industries, a growing number of organizations are taking concrete steps to decarbonize their digital infrastructure. Major cloud providers—including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services—have made public commitments to match their electricity consumption with renewable energy purchases, though critics note that matching is not the same as running on clean power in real time.

Download before you travel. If you anticipate watching content on the go, downloading over a Wi-Fi connection at home is generally more energy-efficient than repeatedly streaming over a cellular network.

Support platforms with green commitments. Ask the platforms you use where their data centers are located and what energy sources power them. Consumer pressure has historically been a powerful driver of corporate environmental behavior.

Pair your viewing with advocacy. The systemic change needed to truly decarbonize the internet—through clean energy mandates, grid modernization, and stronger data center efficiency standards—requires political engagement, not just personal choices.

The Bigger Picture

The carbon cost of streaming is neither a reason to abandon digital media nor a justification for complacency among platform operators. It is, rather, an invitation to think more carefully about the full lifecycle of the information we consume—and to hold both ourselves and the companies we rely on to higher standards.
